About My Classroom

School Information

I teach at Kelly Miller Middle School in the DC Public School system in Washington, DC. The Kelly Miller Middle School website can be found here, and the DCPS school report card can be found here and here.

Demographics

(Source: LearnDC Profile)

Kelly Miller Middle School is 100% economically disadvantaged, 97% black, 3% hispanic, 21% special education, and 53% male.

Mobility Rate

(Source: LearnDC Profile)

Kelly Miller Middle School has a substantial amount of mobility throughout the year, both entering and withdrawing from the school. Most commonly, since we are a neighborhood school, we get students as they are withdrawn from charter schools in the spring.

Special Circumstances

We use the Eureka math curriculum, and are required to stay on pace with this curriculum. The administration creates computer-administers biweekly quizzes, called “Short Cycle Assessments” (SCAs) for our students. We often adjust instructional decisions based on student performance on these SCAs. Additionally, we are highly encouraged by administration for students to be on i-Ready at least once a week completing lessons. For my intervention course, this is a requirement.

Team Structure

The math team consists of: six general education math teachers (two per grade level), four special education math teachers, and a math instructional coach. We meet weekly as a full math team during LEAP seminars. LEAP seminars are DCPS’s initiative to increase professional collaboration among teachers by having them meet up weekly for professional development. More information about leap can be found here. In addition, my instructional coach gives me weekly feedback. The other seventh grade general education math teacher and special education math teacher and myself meet weekly to co-plan.

The seventh grade team has two English teachers, two math teachers, one science teacher, one social studies teacher, an art teacher, two behavioral special education teachers, one special education math teacher, one special education english teacher, a floor dean, three paraprofessionals for the behavioral special education classes, and the academic dean. The academic dean also functions as our floor-level administrator.

Assignments Outside the Classroom

I am a member of the LSAT (Local School Advisory Team) committee. I, along with the rest of the math team, help run math lab after school. This is a space where scholars get homework help, tutoring, and time on i-Ready. I typically work math lab once a week after school. I am also in my second year of Teach for America, so I have the occasional session through Teach for America for my certification.
